Bixbite
History
Bixbite is a rare variety of beryl, red in color. It was first discovered in the 1970's in the Wah Wah Mountains in the state of Utah.
Features
Bixbite, also known as red beryl, is usually heavily included, even more than emerald. As a member of the beryl family it is harder than quartz and softer than sapphire, however it is about as brittle as emerald because of its inclusions.
Treatments
Snce bixbite is a very recent addition to the gem world, and not yet high in demand, it is not treated.
Principal Deposits
Bixbite is found in different locations in the United States, the Wah Wah and the Thomas Mountains in Utah, and the Sierra and Catron Counties in New Mexico.
Rarity
Facetable bixbite of good color and clarity is extremely rare, as it is usually heavily included. Stones of any quality over two carats are almost impossible to find.
